Update from Hauora Hokianga CEO - now Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

Hauora Hokianga weekly community panui - Wednesday 14 September 2022

Kia ora koutou katoa,

Given the Prime Ministers announcement this week regarding the ending of the COVID-19 Protection Framework (traffic lights) it was time to review our Covid-19 email updates (sent out on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays).   With the reduction in Covid-19 numbers, and as we are moving back to a ‘business as usual’ state it is a good time to reduce the emails to once a week.

So from today, please see below a somewhat familiar, but refocused email of our Hauora Hokianga mahi and important news and events – these will be provided every Wednesday.  Today, the 14th of September is a very special day to launch our Hauora Hokianga weekly panui as we recognize a significant 50 year anniversary for Aotearoa.

Māori Language Week, September 12-18 2022

2022 is the 50th anniversary of the Māori Language petition that was presented to Parliament on 14 September 1972. Every year since 1975, New Zealand has marked Māori Language Week, and te reo Māori became an official language of Aotearoa in 1987. So given the kaupapa of the week – korero mai!!!!

Rawene Hospital after hours and acute care beds - reduction of services effective from 5pm 29 August

It has been just over two weeks since the announcement was made to reduce the after-hours and acute care services at Rawene Hospital.   I wanted to acknowledge the concerns that have been raised since this difficult decision and wish to clarify and reiterate some key messages below:

Don’t wait until you are very sick and unwell

  • In an emergency call 111

  • Make sure you have regular check-ups with your general practitioner, nurse practitioner or community nurse

  • Talk with your whanau and friends, have a plan in place should you need to access urgent health services out of hours ie ensure you have petrol in your car

  • If you are unwell during the day – ensure you are seen at a community clinic or urgent care clinic during the day

  • Call Healthline for free - Healthline - 0800 611 116, (7 days a week) so they can help you assess the best place for you to seek care

  • If you live on the north side of the Hokianga Harbour, you can access Kaitaia Hospital

  • If you live on the south side of the Hokianga Harbour, you can access Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa

Dr Old provided an update on the declining Covid-19 case numbers with Dr Watson indicating the rates of influenza at the lowest levels since influenza cases peaked in June.   Dr Jansen highlighted the additional burden on Maori with the higher rate of hospitalisations (2.3 times greater) and mortality (death) rate (2 times) as a result of Covid-19.   They all acknowledged those affected by Covid-19 and particularly those who have lost loved ones.

They all reiterated the importance of continuing with effective public health measures of staying home if you are sick, wearing masks, continuing with vaccinations,  and recording  positive Covid-19 results.

We are moving into a new stage of the pandemic, with the current common BA5 variant,  our vaccination rates and community immunity it is anticipated there will not be significant rises in the coming weeks, however we are not out of the woods yet.  Please continue to be vigilant.
